Develop brand from the ground up, including logo design, packaging design, product rendering and animation, and developing a UI for the Ollee application.
A tracker for your skateboard? Sounds incredible doesn't it!
Ollee reached out to me in late 2022, with a revolutionary new product. Think (almost) Tony Hawk Pro Skater but in the real world. The beauty of Ollee is that you can track how far you skate, what tricks you do, how many you do, how many times you push off the ground (I mean, the list just keeps on going).
So, when they asked me to not only develop a logo, but brand their company, design a UI for their Application (on the App Store and Google Play), I couldn't wait to get stuck into their project.
Developing a logo for Ollee, a sports tracker for your skateboard
Ok, lets start off with the logo for Ollee. There's a fair bit of thought that went into the logo design for this start-up sports brand.
I really wanted to create an ‘ollie’ effect as simply as possible. The skateboard simply shows the initial flight of a board, synonymous with the name of the company.
The type to be strong and bold, and the extra weight in the type allows it to feel a bit more ‘skateboardy’ than otherwise, however it’s not down the avenue of grunge or punk. There’s an element of cleanliness and purity to the logo because it’s still clean, and this is where the technology mindset is implemented in the logo.
Also, the typeface has a very subtle ramp effect across the top of the type, adding a layer of skatepark inspiration.
Cool, right?
Skating is pure, it's raw and authentic. The brand needs to appeal to those people, but with a tech-focus.
Product design & packaging the product so that skaters just can't get enough of it.
With minimal space on the product itself, the symbol of Ollee sits loud and proud. This is the tracker. This is what the skating community will be able to relate to.
It's a device that, as I said, allows you to track your tricks and distance (amongst a whole lot of other things).
Even when it came to the instruction guide, simple steps for a no-fuss community was required. A bit of fun, an easy install. A product that just... works. Lets make the instruction guide feel easy (because it is easy to install), was part of the discussion.
Application and UI Design for a sports tracker app. Badges, tracking, stats and achievements.
What Strava is to the running and cycling community is what the hope Ollee is for the skating community. When I say that, I mean that Strava is your go-to for running and cycling, to see how others have performed and to see how you have performed. Ollee is much the same, but for skating. But, there's a 'gamification' feel to the app – important to the community it's surrounded by.
What does this mean from a design perspective? It means a clear UI. It means an experience which is simple to navigate. And, a whole lot of fun. There's over 70 badges and icons I designed for the app. There's gold, silver and bronze achievements, and a leaderboard. The app is the ongoing contact point, while the device is stuck to the bottom of your board.
Have you outgrown your branding?
Time to launch into the next phase (or, if you're just starting, that's fine too)!
